Baseball: Baseball Gloves

June 23rd, 2008

Baseball gloves are an essential part of the game. Whether you are referring to fielding or batting gloves, each serves a mandatory purpose. Getting the right gloves for your style of play and position can enhance your game (or just put you where you are supposed to be).

Picking the Baseball Gloves that You Need
Baseball gloves are pretty easy to shop for; as long as you know what position you are going to be playing (referring to fielding gloves). The most common glove is more of a utility glove. It is for players that can play both the infield and outfield. The only difference between and outfielders and infielders glove tends to be the length of the web. If you play both and only want one glove, go for a medium cut.

Specialty gloves are usually found on the catcher and first baseman. You will notice that a first basemans glove is going to be much bigger than any other infielders and the cut is made to help field one hop throws from other fielders. While this glove is ideal for first base, it would not be effective anywhere else.

The catchers glove is even more uniquely designed. Catchers have to have a very thick leather to protect their hand as well as a semi-round shape to give the pitcher a good target. The outer padding helps control the ball and the loose leather allows for quick release. There are no other positions on the field that could utilize a catchers mitt.
